The History of Christmas Envelopes

It was the Victorian era that saw the surge of Christmas card giving and receiving. In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, a British civil servant, commissioned the first commercially produced Christmas card. To our dismay, these early cards were often hand-delivered and did not come with envelopes.

Thankfully for us here at The Envelope People, as the popularity of Christmas cards grew, so did the need for Christmas envelopes. These were often plain envelopes, serving the sole purpose of protecting the enclosed card. Overtime, people started to get a little more creative. Envelope decoration and personalisation become popular in the late 1800s, with leaf printing being a go-to choice.

As the world advanced with new printing technology, and with the rise of the postal network, Christmas cards and Christmas envelopes became more affordable to the general public.
